Letter to Major Brooks from Mueller at Fort Pulaski answering questions asked by Major Brooks in a previous letter about troops, work, and enemy fire during a siege.
Transcription[Letter, continued] soon or [????] the County- sent to me. 2nd; Who are the most deserving me in County-"I"? I don't know- out of the number of men engaged with me they all behaved so well that I could not designate two. One might be chosen for this reason that in addition to his good behavior which was not surpassed by any he was wounded on the night of 26th August. His name William H. Wood. (He belongs to [??????] Orange County). As to the men deserving mention they all deserve it. 3rd; What portion of the work on the night was done in the night? I should say two thirds. 4th; What portion of your work was simply shoveling sand? I should say including the filling of sand bags three fourths or a little over. 5th; What portion of the work which a citizen laborer will do in civil life will be done by a soldier in the same time under the circumstances under which we worked? I should say taken on the average the soldiers did as much in the whole time as citizen laborers would in civil life, and I am not sure that taking into consideration the times when men worked for their lives to
