TranscriptionCopy letter; Engineers Office; Morris Island S.C.; August 22nd 1863; Brig. [Brigadier] Genl. [General] Q.A. Gillmore; Comdg. [Commanding] Dept. [Department] of the South; General; I have the honor to state that at 9 o'c yesterday morning Ft. Wagner opened an artillery fire on the head of our Sap distant about 400 yds. [yards] from the work. Capt. [Captain] Walker in charge at the time, continued the work to 11 o'c. At least 16 shots were fired-one [expended?] in the sap roller, several touched it and the parapet was much torn. At 11 1/2 o'c the work was discontinued on account of this fire and, that of the enemies Sharp Shooters, who occupied a position in the ruins on the left, which enfiladed the trench. The 85th Pa. [Pennsylvania] did the advance guard duty yesterday. Their casualties amounted, I am informed, to 25 during their term of duty. Yesterday I requested Genl. [General] Terry
