Transcription[Letter] "Copy"; Department of the South and Northern Dist. [District?] of Dept. [Department] of the South; Hilton Head So. [South] Car. [Carolina]; April 28, 1862; We do not hesitate to advise the Officers and Men of Col. [Colonel] Serrells Volunteer Engineer Regiment to accept pay as Infantry, pending the final settlement of the question of their status in the service by Congress. We believe the acceptance of such Infantry pay will not, and ought not to prejudice their claims to additional as equitably Entitled by their services in the field in this department, and by the letter of the Secretary of War of Sept. [September] 27th 1860, which accepted these troops as Volunteer Engineers Officers and Soldiers, and by the endorsement of Brig [Brigadier] Genl [General] T.W. Sherman on Col [Colonel] Serrells letter to Capt. [Captain] Pelouze A.A. Gen [General] of Feb [February] 7, 1862 in which Gen [General] Sherman states as follows "Serrells Regiment was mustered into Service as Engineers and are doing duty as such. I was informed by the Sec [Secretary] of War in a conversation on the subject that they were so ordered by the President and were entitled to pay as Engrs. [Engineers]. This thing was so settled before I left Washington."
