Transcription[Letter, continued] to this Comp [Company] and has even speculated on obtaining the Captaincy, building his hopes on your resigning, he would give Lt [Lieutenant] Hartman the command of one of the new Companies to be raised under the new organization, if the men are in any way consulted, he will not even belong to the Comp [Company], let alone being Capt [Captain]. You will be glad to hear that John Robertson has returned to the Comp [Company]. You will remember him as one of the four sent to Tortugas, the other 3 have also returned, but still refuse to do duty. They are in charge Provost Guard Hilton Head, 15 of Comp [Company] D still refuse, all are chained together they say. I cannot say what will be their fate, I don't see they can do anything to them except send them back. They all report having had first rate times down there and prefer it before being at Hilton Head or here. Cor [Corporal] Thos [Thomas] Smith has returned to Comp [Company] he is not entirely well and says never will be. I think he intends applying for a discharge. Barbarow has the appointment of Hospital Steward, I think that's the right man in the right place. We have received 10 recruits since you left us, pretty good men, but cannot stand soldiers life, been sick after every little exposure. The Comp [Company] is well divided now more so than ever it was, on the morning report, present 17 Enlisted men, a large Comp [Company] for duty when the drummer, 2 cooks, and orderly is taken out. Serg't [Sergeant] Kelly and 30 men are at Elliots Plantation, cutting and rafting logs. Serg't [Sergeant] McLaughlin and 12 men are some 8 miles from here, on this Island, cutting and rafting logs. Serg't [Sergeant] Anyau and a few of our men, are extending the railroad at Hilton Head, a few others are detached to chief Engrs [Engineers] Office, a few others on daily and detached duty at and around Hilton Head. We left Hilton Head for here on the 29th [????], our object is to aid in building a pier similar to the one at the Head, its length will be about 600 feet, which will give 16 feet water low tide, it is already commenced. The timber from Elliots is brought by Tug and from where McL [McLaughlin?] is by our men, aided by a detail of the 97th regt [regiment] Penn [Pennsylvania] Comp [Company] D men are working the logs, all being under Capt [Captain] Graef, Comdg [Commanding] detachment. The pier is being built on Beaufort river about a mile above where it forms a junction with Broad river. The object I believe is to make this part of the Island a camping ground for soldiers, it being expected that Genl [General] Hunter will bring a lot with him, when he returns. Hilton Head
