Transcription[Letter, continued] is not considered healthy enough for fresh troops. This Island has the advantage of higher ground and fewer swamps. We all like this place better than the Head. The plantations are extensive and some of the planters must have been rich, owning a good number of slaves. Their houses and gardens are going fast to decay. There are a good many negroes on the plantations now, but are not the original ones. They are settled here, from everywhere, Edisto, James and [????] islands. Gen'l [General] Saxton has agents on the principal [principle] plantations. We have a rumor you intend shortly to return to us, all the boys hope so and I assure you of being welcome, we are tired of the way we have been in regard to officers. Your presence will restore the former tone and influence the comp [company] held and at once stop our being made a catspaw of by others, for their benefit. The company has begun to get a hard name, before we left the Head I don't know if example had anything to do with it, perhaps it had, few men of Comp [Company] "A" (even including the assigned) ever refuse whiskey, anyway there is still the spunk and material in the Comp [Company], if properly handled, to do anything, and to recover whatever ground they have lost. I shall be glad to hear from you, and if agreeable keep you posted in regard to matters hereabouts. [Donohue?] sends his love to you, and prays you may return to him. I very often here herein do so. Trusting that you may soon return to us. I am Your obt [obedient] ser't [servent]; H.C. Macaulay; Serg't [Sergeant] Comp [Company] "A"; Capt. [Captain] T.B. Brooks
