Transcription[Letter, continued] Query 2nd; "Amount of work of the different kinds done by each party. How many on what part of one Sap Roller, Faggot, Fascine, or Gabion can one skilled or instructed make in one day?; Answer; I found that by giving the men a [????] more work could be done, thus I gave the Gabion men (7 for a day's work) while before they only made 4 or 5. I reported the same result with the Fascine parties, giving theirs as a [illegibe] (12 "18 ft [feet] long" 16 16 ft [feet] 16 12 ft [feet]) or (24 Sap Faggots) Thus I found that at night I had at least 1/3 more work done. The Sap Roller party were out [skilled?]. Great care was taken in the construction of, and in preserving, material suitable for the purpose. I was satisfied if the men made (Two in three days) providing they were well made. This work was done under my [????] supervision. I consider that one skilled in making Gabions to might make in one day, Two Gabions, One Fascine and material for another or Six Sap Faggots and collect about 1/2 enough material for a Sap Roller.; Query 3rd; "How many Gabions and how many Fascines could a Four [horse?] Team draw?; Answer; In relation to Gabions, as many as could be put on the Wagons. I found that all I could get in was (28 for a load (Fascines (8 to 12 according to the size).
