TranscriptionMonday August 24th 1863; Siege work Day-at Mid-Day; Lieut. [Lieutenant] Farrand went on duty at 8 o'c A.M. and was relieved at 4 o'c P.M.; 1st. Placing mortar platforms for 4-8 inch mortars near 3rd parallel (completed); 2nd. Preparing Coehorn Mortars in 4th parallel; 3rd. Widening trench, in order that carts might pass; Detail 16 Engrs. [Engineers] and 45 Infantry; Capt. [Captain] Suess went on duty at 11 o'c A.M. and was relieved at 7 o'c P.M.; Worked in the Sap, also placed platforms for 3 Coehorn Mortars, raised the platform of Requa guns 18 inches, strengthened the parapet, and widened the trench of 4th Parallel. The new Sap, forming the rifle pits of the advanced pickets, was enlarged, banqueted and extended about 25 feet; Detail 12 Engrs. [Engineers] and 35 Infantry; Material used, 500 Sand bags
