TranscriptionAug. [August] 17; The 300 pdr. gun was taken inside the battery, but was not mounted. Our batteries opened at sunrise dividing their attention between Gregg, Johnson and Wagner and occasionally paying their respects to Sumter by way of experiment. The Navy were engaged from 8 o'c till noon when they retired for dinner. 6 Monitors, New Ironsides and 5 gun boats in. In the afternoon 2 Monitors engaged Wagner. Few casualties on our side and no damage done to the batteries. Sumter showed the marks of some shot.
