Report of general observations and conclusions relating to artillery and fatigue duty in the siege of the defense of Charleston. Brooks writes about the effectiveness of 8-inch shells, and that shells falling at a high angle are the only projectiles available against the earth works built on this coast. He writes that black troops will do more work than white troops and will have far less sickness. The siege of Sebastopol is also mentioned.
TranscriptionSiege of Sebastopol 1. Fire was opened on Vera Cruze the 13th Day at the landing. 2. The allies opened on Sebastopol 27 days after the battle of the [????]. 3. Genl. [General] McClellan was ready to open fire on Yorktown 30 days after the landing. 4. We landed on Morris Isl. [Isle] July 10th and had 42 pieces in position [against?] Ft. [Fort] Wagner on the [morning?] of the 18th not having broke ground until the night of the 13th. 5. The only [????] used by the Russians at Sebastopol was at the [????] of the flag staff Bastion.
