Transcriptionuntil this fire be subdued or kept down. These light guns are run behind the [inner lines?] to about one shot, hence it is only by destroying this parapet [with?] our heavy guns in the 2nd Parallel, thus uncovering them, or by rendering their service not possible by a superior fire from light guns, mounted in the 4th Parallel, assisted by a strong force of sharpshooters. Our light guns in the 2nd parallel can not be used effectively against Wagner on account of the distance and the fact that their fire endangers our men in the advance. Five men I am informed have been already injured. The first I consider the best plan-for so long as the enemy are strongly intrenched in Ft. Wagner they will give us serious annoyance and have an excellent base from which to assault our works-which they must now more than ever be convinced is the only hope.
