Transcription[Letter] Hd. Qrs. [Headquarters] Dept [Department] of the South; Engineers Office-Morris Isle, S.C.; Sept [September] 1st 1863; Capt [Captain] C.B. Reese U.S. Engrs [Engineers]; Assist [Assistant] and Consulting Engr [Engineer] Dept [Department] of the South; Morris Isle S.C.; Captain; I regret to be obliged to report myself unfit for duty today. I am scarcely sick; but having been on duty for fifty consecutive days and the fifty intervening nights until 12 o'c [o'clock] except two I am physically exhausted, and will require a short period of rest to recuperate. My attention since the 22nd [????] has been confined to the Engineering works on the right and in advance of the 1st Parallel. They comprise (1) The Main Defensive Line being the 2nd Parallel; (2) Breaching Batteries erected just in rear of this line against Sumter; (3) Approaches and Batteries against Ft. [Fort] Wagner. From actual observation you are already informed of the condition of the work. I have used the following plan as regards details, hours of relieving transportation andc [etc.]
