Transcription[Letter] Morris Island S. C. [South Carolina] Aug. [August] 28/63; Capt. [Captain] T. B. Brooks, Asst. [Assistant] Engr. [Engineer]; Sir; [????] to your desire I hencewith send you a rough sketch of the plan of forming a direct [????] communication along and parallel to the beach, connecting our forward lines. The advanced trenches as far as they are now constructed are shown in black (I hope their relative position as have laid down may come near enough to the truth); the communication in red. The part of the proposed trench forward of the 3rd parallel or thereabouts could require only 9' width at bottom, as it would be scarcely advisable to send horse teams further ahead. The number of traverses would depend upon their length, height and clear distance from each other, particularly from the latter element, which would at once determine both length and height. About 30 Yds [yards] clear dist. might be proper. Just in rear of the right flank of the 4th parallel a splinter-proof A is indicated for the Officers in charge of the trench and of the Eng. troops. In its rear a small depot of tools and materials could be established. In a similar way other branch-trenches could be run out to the left at various points, convenient for sheltering troops, [????] fatigue-parties, temporary hospitals splinter-proofs, etc. The various traverses might be finished each with a [????] to bear upon the beach. A system of parallel-trenches (B) is indicated in dotted lines, forward of the last line now constructed, furnished with proper connections (C), and so arranged that each trench forward will be somewhat out-flanked by the one immediately in its rear, to prevent its being [????]
