George Tipton Barn, Chestnut Flats Road, Cades Cove, Tennessee Great Smoky Mountains National Park NOTE the split rails used to fill the chinks, the absence of mud sealing the chink, and the rived pine boards ceiling the chink. Many of those rived boards are four feet long... In riving the boards (shakes) to cover the roof, the heart portions of the log cannot be used... these are often used to cell the chinks. The space between the piling which forms the upstream face of the dam and the logs on the breast were filled with rock for ballast. Decay has allowed its ballast to be washed away by floods.
