Four cottages burned to the ground, Elkmont, Tennessee, 1975 Great Smoky Mountains National Park Four Cottages burned to the ground early Friday, Nov. 28, 1975. The fire started sometime after mid-night. J.T. Higdon, the caretaker, had made his patrol about 11:30 P.M. The burned cottages were discovered by Ray ownby, Elkmont resident, shortly before 8 A.M. Cottages were owned by Mrs. H.T.
