Repairs, Mingus Mill Great Smoky Mountains National Park Repairs to Mingus Mill- concrete slab under penstock. The shutters on the windows were placed there because a group of Boy Scouts broke out the windows, ca 1965. The shutters were put up every winter when the mill was closed. Toll Dish Great Smoky Mountains National Park If a man took his corn to the mill and the Miller was not there, he could grind it himself, for the operation of the common tub mill is a simple affair, and buildings of all kinds were seldom locked. It was the custom to pay 1/8th of the grain ground as toll for the grinding. . . Thistoll measured with a toll dish which usually measured 1/8th of a bushel. The photograph shows such a toll dish found at Mingus Creek Mill, Smokemont, NC . . . The screw for lifting the stone does not show exactly in the picture. The two curved iron pieces are called the bales" which must touch the stone only at the ends to permit it to turn. The iron pins which hold the bales to the stone is called the "eye." View from downstream showing the butts of logs projecting between the cross logs. These butts may be the ends of logs or of whole trees. Frequently whole trees were used in constructing these dams. The branches (limbs) were placed upstream and covered with earth and stone then anchoring the dam. The division dam is to the left of the main dam. The water from the dam is used in running the Cable Mill.
