Sign at Clingmans Overlook Great Smoky Mountains National Park CLINGMAN's OVERLOOK: Named for General Thomas L. Clingman (1812-1897), statesman and conservationist of Western North Carolina, who resigned his seat in the US Senate to become Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. In the 1850's General Clingman was responsible for the first trail from Indian Gap to Clingman's Dome. The elevation here is 6311 feet above sea level.
