Smokemont Nature Trail sign Great Smoky Mountains National Park Smokemont Nature Trail: A century ago the only people who visited these mountains were a few white pioneers and the Cherokee Indians. Then came the early settlers who cultivated the fertile valleys and some of the sloping mountainsides. These were followed by lumbermen-sawmills were operating here only a few decades ago. Finally there came the establishment of preserving all the plant and animal life for all time. This nature trail circles back to this place in less than a leaflet and stopping at the numbered guide-posts you will become better acquainted with the Smokemont portion of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Grading unnecessary for a 4' trail when the side slope is this steep. Chasteen Creek Trail Great Smoky Mountains National Park Grading unnecessary for a 4' trail when the side slope is this steep. Advantage should have been taken of the rock in the bank when placing the water bar. A small gully across the bar should have been placed here, with the end butted into the bank at the upper side of the rock, and the grade should have been flattened a little for a few feet above the bar. Always take advantage of rock or stumps when placing water bars, because they will be the starting place of a natural cross drainage.Chasteen Creek Trail, II-Th-5235, Physical Facilities - Trails - Horse Trails

The southernmost extent of this cool evergreen forest is in Great Smoky Mountains National Park; here it reaches its maximum development.
