Butt to Mr. SaveryHarpers Ferry National Historical Park; National Park ServiceA sheet of off-white paper lightly ruled in blue carrying the letterhead of the National Hotel with an engraved view of the building printed in black and containing a longhand note in black ink enclosing 2 deeds of the Shenandoah Pulp Co. with a request to make note of them on the abstract of title. (see cat. #3840). The lower edge is irregular, the obverse has an ink blot at the center of the top margin. The paper has horizontal folds. Lower edge has insect damage.

The center panel of the reverse has in ink- Mr. Savery. Some of the padding compound from the top edge has adhered to the reverse along the lower crease.

Inscribed in pencil-pass privates hargrove, Smith and Kaufman to town until 7 1/2 oclock/by order of/Captain E. J. Magruder. The inscription also identifies the Rome light guards and gives the date-June 14th. Paper is creased by 3 vertical folds. The left and right ends of the paper are stained, particular the reverse of the right end where the paper has broken at one point across a fold

Paper has been creased by one horizontal and 3 vertical folds. The document has separated almost completely along the horizontal fold. The left and lower edges have short tears with minor losses.

Paper is discolored and smudged in spots and generally soiled. Item was salvaged from building 14, Burton's Jewelry Store, when the store was dismantled.

This was in a government envelope marked hfd-42/ Cassandra Dittmeyer. cat. #'s 8256-8259 were also in the envelope

Holt and attesting receipt of the deed. Small tears and pinholes, several creases.
